Course Syllabus
Computer Science 1 is half-year beginning level computer course that focuses on developing a basic understanding of various computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, database, PowerPoint, Internet, HTML) and allows for some experience with programming.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
·Identify and describe the parts of the computer and various peripheral devices.
·Utilize a word processing software application to create and modify documents as well as manipulate the formatting tools.
·Utilize a spreadsheet software application to create and manipulate information including the use of formulas, formatting and charting.
·Utilize a database software application to store and manipulate information including the use of sorts, searches and reports.
·Utilize a presentation software application to create professional, organized desktop presentation.
·Describe the Internet, its uses and be able to utilize various search methods.
·Utilize HTML tags to create a basic web page.
·Utilize the Java programming language to create computer programs.
Grading Criteria:
Quarter Grades are assessed as follows:
·Homework Assignments 15% of each quarter grade
Each homework assignment will be collected and graded out of 5 points. To earn a score of 5, the assignment must be thoroughly done, correct, and neatly submitted by the due date.
·Lab Application Assignments 25% of each quarter grade
Each graded lab assignment will be graded out of 10 points. To earn 10 points, the assignment must be thoroughly done, correct and completed by the due date.
·Quizzes 25% of each quarter grade
Quizzes will be written assessments that will be given several times a quarter.
·Tests 35% of each quarter grade
Tests will be hands-on assessments on the application skills learned. A test will be given upon completion of each software application.
Computer Science 1 Final Average will be assessed as follows:
·Quarter 1 Average 40%
·Quarter 2 Average 40%
·Final Exam 20%
