April 1, 2009
I was absent from school yesterday to attend a genetics conference that was given at Ballston Spa High School by Sam Rhine, a professor at Indiana State.  One of the topics was stem cell research.  I wanted to share this with you because stem cell research ignites controversy.  There are strong differences in opinion, both in favor of it and against it, because it involves the destruction of an embryo.
The exciting news at the conference was that we now have the capability of using normal cells instead of embryos. Simplified... by reversing the codes that differentiate cells into the types they will become(skin, nerve, etc) science can turn normal cells into the type of cells that (up to now) could only be derived (at  high cost) from an embryo.  At present we are closer than ever before of finding cures for genetic diseases like Parkinsons and diabetes.  All that without destroying one single embryo!!!!!!!!!
                                                                 Incredible!!

April 1, 2009
